The Haryana Social Forestry Project was launched wHh World Bank assistance In 1982-83 for a period of five years to establish 67000 hectares of plantations with financial outlay of Rs. 333.26 millions but later on extended upto 31.3.91 and it is likely to be further extended by one more year. The main obJectlvea were to provide fuel, fodder, fruit, grasses, small timber and to generate employment In rural areas. By the end of March 1991 plantations have been raised over an area of 1 ,03,683 hectares and an amount of Rs. 597.75 mlliions has been spent. During the course of implementation we have learnt lessons that people's participation must be ensured If Social Forestry Programmes are to succeed but people's partiCipation is difficult to be achieved unless they are first persuaded that they can obtain tangible benefits from the programme.- Experiences in Poplar Cultivation

Cultivation of poplars has a well defined scope in land outside State forests in Haryana and similar other intensively cultivated state lacking natural forests. Poplar plantatlons are a step in the right direction to meet the acute shortage of wood. Roads, canals and farm lands are important sites outside traditional forests where poplar cultivation can be taken up. Roads do not provide ideal sites because of cattle damage and lack of proper irrigation. However, canal sites are well suited and the planting spots along canal should follow the seepage line of the embankment and therefore, the sites have to be selected with reference to the depth of seepage line. Farm lands provide ideal sites for this species for raising plantations in rows along field boundaries and also in intergretion with agricultural crops, Sugarcene is an ideal companion crop for growth of Populus Deltoides G-3. Loam and slit loam soils are best suited for optimum growth. Even mild alkalinity and salinity reduces survival percentage and growth. Intensive soil management is needed for optimum production. Hand watering is a wasteful and ineffective practice. Planned research is required to promote development of poplars, Clones for water logged and alkali soils. Proper machinery and equipment are required to drill deep holes. Spacing is of not much serious consideration for row planting but needs careful consideration when poplars are grown with crops in block Plantations. In block plantations a spacing of 3 m × 5 m is recommendad.- Factors Encouraging Vegetable Cultivators to Grow Vegetable According to the Tradition of Vegetable Cultivation in Haryana

The present study was conducted in rural agricultural Haryana. For the purpose, four districts namely Sonipat, Gurgaon, Kurukshetra and Hisar were selected on the basis of highest area under vegetable cultivation. From each selected district, one tehsil was selected. Seventy five respondents from each tehsil were randomly selected for the purpose of data collection. Respondents were personally interviewed using well structured schedule. The data revealed that there were two types of vegetable cultivators, traditional (83%) and innovative (17%). Both gave their on reasons being engaged in vegetable cultivation. Traditional vegetable cultivators follow the trends due to higher income (99.59%) and full utilization of family labour (98.79%) and hundred per cent Innovative vegetable cultivators adopted vegetable cultivation because of higher income, regular market demand, more crop in a year from the same piece of land and getting money throughout the year. Overall vegetable cultivation is a profitable deal that's why they are following their tradition of vegetable cultivation. Keywords

From each selected district, one tehsil was selected. Seventy five respondents from each tehsil were randomly selected for the purpose of data collection. Respondents were personally interviewed using well structured schedule. The data reveals that majority of the respondents had family education up to matric (56.33%) followed by up to graduation (25%) and illiterate (16%). Only about 3 per cent of the respondents had family education up to graduation and above. Those who were belongs to more educated family were more prone to change and adopted new scientific techniques more than compare to less educated family and innovative farmers who were diversified to vegetable cultivators were belongs to more educated family as compare to the traditional farmers. Though Association of scientific technique of farming and Innovative vegetable cultivators were found to be positively associated with higher family education. Keywords
